"The mentoring of the next generation has always been important to me, not only in nurturing those that will succeed us but also enabling ourselves to learn from them, as they do from us"
Adey has always gained satisfaction from nurturing those that wish to study theatre and the performing arts. As well as directing High School productions, and youth productions, he was a judge for the regional arm of the International Sheila Winn Shakespeare Competition for high schools.
"In the creation of the Newmarket Stage Company part of my focus was to include local tertiary institutions, to the extent that when we produced Educating Rita, a student from the local Arts and Design college, (Whitecliffe), came on board as wardrobe designer and dresser, and was mentored by a seasoned professional."
"During their season of Educating Rita last year, we were able to place one of our final year students into the creative team as wardrobe co-ordinator. As work experience at this professional level, this opportunity was invaluable to the student and to us as a college. The student gained insight into the industry of theatre and the skills to work independently sourcing costume material. The company already seems to be community focused, involving local businesses and groups and providing easy access to live theatre" - Belinda Watt, HOD Fashion Design, Whitecliffe College
"Many of the productions have involved graduates who have learnt from the best. For our production of 'Tuesdays With Morrie' we took on an intern, paid them and now they are a Production Assistant in a professional theatre company."
Adey personally mentored the above student to take his first professional steps and he is a promising Director and Actor.
"As an Artistic Director it always appealed to me to bring a company of recent theatrical graduates on board as a rep company for say, a month's season. Rehearse and perform two or three plays, for a short season each, giving the students not only a taste of what it's like to work in a professional company, with professional guidance straight out of college or training, but also giving them a chance to showcase their talents, on and off stage in front of a real audience and industry professionals."
